However, the Spotify app no longer updates with anything, so I'm wondering why it even exists anymore, or if Spotify's recent update broke it, or if it is just not working for me, in which case, I'd like to know what I need to do to fix it.
Log out and back into your account Occasionally this is necessary to force a sync of info between your device and our account system
Check the status of your subscription Go to your account page and scroll to Your plan.
Check the status of your payment If your Spotify payment is marked as 'pending' on your bank statement, it might not have gone through successfully. When you submit a payment, your bank puts the funds aside as ‘pending’. If the payment fails, the pending status will expire and the funds will be returned to you. Check that your Premium subscription isn’t on another account You might be logged into the wrong account. It's possible to create multiple Spotify accounts, each with their own login details, saved music, and subscription plans. Check to see if you have any other accounts.

Spotify App Not Updating To Premium
If you can’t download or update any apps, including free apps, and you see a message about billing or payment, learn what to do. If you want to update apps, you can update them manually or turn on automatic updates. But if your app won't update or is interrupted while it's downloading, try these steps.
Select Apps from the drop-down menu at the top left. Click Updates just beneath the top window. Single-click the icon of the app you want to update. In the section that opens, click the Update button. When the app has updated, sync your iPhone like normal and install the updated app.
